I personally have been blessed to have lived in a few different places throughout this beautiful country of Mexico. As well have visited some spectacular and amazing places in Mexico. I have found myself situated back in the Yucatan. Merida, the capital of Yucatan, is a fabulous city, loaded with so much culture, from modern to Mayan, one can always find something to do here. Although unlike the tourist traps that lye only a few hours away, Playa del Carmen and Cancun, Merida has retained its charm and beauty without being over run. Beaches are a short 20 minute drive from the center of town and are peaceful, clean and not crowded. All the features and benefits are there, don't get me wrong, it is just not with the Cancun flair to it. Makes for a pleasant day catching up on some shell collecting and sun collecting.

I have created a beautiful website that provides the traveler with some superb insight to our "White City", please take a moment and visit our site at http://www.TravelMerida.com.

Mexico is still very much a third world country. Yes, there is still corruption here, and violence (although I believe there’s less than in the U.S.), and all of the problems faced by most modern countries. I do agree that this is the place to be; the majority of the people are kind, gracious and very family oriented.

Prices for housing are less than in comparable areas of the U.S., food prices are close to U.S. prices because we are so close to the U.S. Gasoline is cheaper, a godsend for those of us dumb enough to still drive gas guzzling SUV’s. Entrepeneurship is amazing here and the creativity and drive to succeed is growing constantly. But poverty is rampant, there is no welfare system, health care for the very poor with serious problems can by abysmal. Many people go to bed hungry, live in conditions that would be unimaginable in the states and education is a low priority for those children must work in order for the family to survive. Yes, education is free, but text books, school supplies and uniforms are not.

I have no desire to go back to live in the states, I am happy with my life here just south of Ensenada, but I do not deceive myself that this is paradise with lots of happy dancing, smiling people. We do what we can, most Americans and Canadians and others who live here or visit on a regular basis give time and money to help improve the lives of our neighbors who do without so many things. There is a scholarship fund, a program to knit caps, Christmas baskets, continuous food distribution — I could go on, but the list changes each day as needs change. If one is looking for a safe, beautiful, friendly place to live, a place where you can make a significant difference in someone’s life (or not, as you choose), this is it.

SO TRUE!!!! I am one of those upper middle class people that has moved to Mexico. Believe me we are many. This is a very good article. I have traveled to the USA and Mexico often in the last five years. I saw the boom in Mexico and the down fall of the USA. Than all of a sudden all this bashing on Mexico!!!!!! BS!!!!! The pig Flue Please!! No one had it that I came across!!!! The people that died from it had other complications. It is just away to keep us spending our $$ in the USA. At first as an American I thought while the economy is bad in the USA. But please it is out of control NOW!!! It is very sad how the people in charge want us to remain poor slaves and consumers in the USA. I am so sad for all the baby Boomers who lost their retirement in investments (Stocks, 401 or real-estate in USA) and the new young adults who grew up spoiled and have know have a slap on their face. I believe it was done on purpose to keep us hard working americans working here and consuming. VERY SAD!!!!!!!!! I have seen everything in this article happening. This is what I tell everyone I meet. Good to see other people see it to!!!!. I just hope Mexico does not turn like the USA.

Hi Joanna, just found your article and my picture here. And would like to tell you about my '3rd place wine' at this event, which also had a unique birth. It was a late harvest of ~50kg Sirah way beyond their point. It was labor-some to handpick still good shriveled grapes from between the ones that had been already eaten by bees. At the same day I had harvested 90kg grapes type Grenache that was at their finest. The exquisite berry flavor came out from the beginning and has matured wonderfully so far!
